Swiss street-legal classic
Italian elegance, American power, British eccentricity—the 1960s Trident Clipper V-8 Coupé is one of the rarest and most fascinating “hidden gems” in British sports car history. It combines British engineering, Italian design, and American V8 power in a single car.
The left-hand-drive Trident Clipper V8 Coupé offered here was originally delivered new to International Motors in Austin, Texas. It is one of the most famous surviving Trident Clippers and ranks among the earliest ever built. Gooding described it as one of the first of only 29 Clippers built and even as one of just 10 cars with the Ford 289 high-performance engine—today significantly rarer than many Ferraris, Aston Martins, or Jaguars of its era.
Rescued from deterioration caused by outdoor storage in 1988, the car—with approximately 6,800 miles on the odometer—was painstakingly restored and brought to a condition far superior to that of a brand-new factory delivery. Finished in “Ferrari Rosso Chiaro” paint with black Connolly leather upholstery, this Trident Clipper was invited to Pebble Beach in 1996 and exhibited there. It was also prominently featured in a special edition of “Automobile Quarterly” and graced the cover of the book in 1999.
In early 2013, this stunning Trident Clipper V8 Coupé was purchased and imported by a Swiss collector and enthusiast. It is in perfectly maintained, immaculately cared-for, and highly original collector’s condition, with MFK veteran status and, according to the history passed down to us, its original 9,400 miles.
With its robust chassis, American suspension, lightweight Italian body, and correspondingly breathtaking performance, this Trident Clipper is undeniably one of the best—if not the very best—exemplars of a rare and coveted model series.
