Only 1251 Ponton Coupés built
Swiss road registration with veteran entry
The Mercedes-Benz W 180, better known as the Mercedes-Benz 220 or 220 S, was an upper class model with a six-cylinder engine from Daimler-Benz in the years 1954 to 1959. The “large” Ponton Mercedes were built in parallel with the upper mid-range W 120/W 121 (“small Ponton” with four-cylinder engines).
As with the four-cylinder models the year before, Daimler-Benz introduced the self-supporting body for the 220 six-cylinder models starting in March 1954, a departure from the ladder-frame designs of the pre-war era.
As the successor to the 220 a, the 220 S model was the “standard” six-cylinder in the Ponton series. It was built as a sedan from 1956 to 1959.
The M 180 III engine, which was upgraded with a two-carburetor system, produced 74 kW (100 hp) in the first version and 78 kW (106 hp) later.
The 220 S Cabriolet was offered from July 1956. The 220 S Coupé was launched three months later in October 1956. It corresponded to the open-top version except for the fixed roof. Both cars were based on the 220 S sedan (W 180 II).
The engine was taken over unchanged. The interior featured precious wood dashboard and window surrounds, leather upholstery, heating and ventilation with standing fan.
With a total of only 1251 cars built, Ponton coupes with carburetor engines are among the rarest models in Mercedes-Benz post-war production.
This Mercedes-Benz 220 S Coupé comes from a large Mercedes-Benz collection which was liquidated and offers top value for money. Swiss car. The car was taken out of service in 2015 – is ready to run, drives and shifts cleanly.
