The body of the Mondial came from Pininfarina. The side air intakes were the model for the extremely wide flanks of the later Testarossa. It is the last car produced by Ferrari with a mid-engine and four seats.
The “t” stands for trasversale (Italian word for transverse) and refers to the transversely mounted transmission. The engine, on the other hand, was installed longitudinally. This design had previously been used in the Ferrari 312T Formula 1 racing car. Thus the Mondial t 3.4 was the first of a new generation of modern V8 Ferraris. In it, all the essential new components of the 348 were used even before its appearance.
