De Tomaso Pantera
First registration 01.1973
Swiss road registration with veteran entry
The De Tomaso Pantera offered here was delivered in the USA at the beginning of 1973 and later exported to Italy, where it was bought by the last owner over 20 years ago and imported to Switzerland. The car has always been cared for and professionally serviced and maintained regardless of cost. In the last 2 years alone, over CHF 45,000 has been invested, including the complete underbody being ice-blasted, tectyl-coated and cavity-sealed, and the cooling system, front and rear axles and drive shafts overhauled. This beautiful De Tomaso Pantera is veteran-approved and in top condition.
After initially designing racing cars for Formula 1, the Modena-based company Automobili De Tomaso began producing road sports cars in the mid-1960s. The Vallelunga, produced in 55 units in 1963, was followed three years later by the Mangusta, De Tomaso’s first sports car, which was equipped with a large American eight-cylinder engine from Ford.
The Pantera was then an improved version of its predecessor, the Mangusta, in many respects. Gian Paolo Dallara developed the chassis, in which the weight was better distributed than in the Mangusta. Furthermore, instead of the 289/302 engines (4.7/4.9 l) of the Mangusta, the 351 Cleveland (5.7 l) with four-barrel carburetor – 4V, derived from racing, was now fitted.
Unlike many other sports cars of its time, the Pantera had a simple but stable self-supporting body, the design and details of which were the work of Tom Tjaarda, who was head of design at Carrozzeria Ghia at the time.
