Alfa Romeo F1 – 179C
Formula 1 racing car
Year of manufacture: 1981
Used in the 1981 F1 season
Completely overhauled
The Alfa Romeo 179C was the version of the Alfa Romeo 179 introduced in 1979 that was designed and developed by Autodelta, specifically for the 1981 Formula 1 season.
The Alfa Romeo 179C offered here is one of four built and bears chassis number #1. It was used in the 1981 racing season by the Alfa Romeo factory team with drivers Mario Andretti and Bruno Giacomelli. The race debut as the main car, previously used as a spare car, was for #1 on May 17 in Belgium, where Bruno Giacomelli drove it to 9th place. It was also used in Monaco, but Giacomelli unfortunately retired after a collision with Alboreto.
After the 1981 season, this F1 race car spent over 40 years with only two owners in Italy and Switzerland before being completely restored, with the engine totally overhauled and improved by a renowned Swiss Alfa Romeo expert. The only operating time the engine has now recorded is that of the dynamometer. FiA papers from 2003 and 2007 as well as a freshly prepared expert opinion are available. The Alfa Romeo 179C is in perfectly maintained, freshly overhauled collector’s condition – ready to race, making it a welcome guest at all major historic racing events.
