Mercedes-Benz 300 S Coupé (W 188 I)
First registration 07.1953
Only 216 built coupes
Swiss road registration with veteran entry
The Mercedes-Benz 300 S offered here is one of only 216 built coupes of this series. It was ordered in Germany in 1953, produced and finally delivered to the USA. In the US state of New York, the car was (re)discovered by a Dutchman in 2012 and shipped back to Europe where it very quickly found a German buyer and was extensively restored. This beautiful Mercedes-Benz 300 S Coupé was finally imported to Switzerland by its last owner in 2017. It has been regularly and professionally maintained. To date, no less than another CHF 180,000 has been invested in this 300 S and it is in top maintained collector condition. Many invoices and documents like the old order/delivery bill from 1953, American title and the German registration certificate are present.
The internally named W 188, two-door Mercedes-Benz 300 S, was introduced in October 1951 at the Salon de l’Automobile in Paris.
With a total of 760 units produced, a W 188 is rarer than the famous “gullwing” 300 SL. Over the entire production period, the W 188 was the most expensive vehicle in the Mercedes range.
The cars were available as coupé, convertible A and roadster. They had the six-cylinder engine of the W 186 sedan with 2996 cc displacement, which now developed 150 hp (110 kW) with three Solex carburetors and accelerated the vehicles up to 175 km/h. Only 216 coupes were produced from June 1952 to July 1955.
